Homeschool Connection

Summit Christian Academy is excited to announce a new partnership in ministry for local homeschool families. At SCA, we believe that God has given parents the responsibility of providing their children with a Bible-based education. For some families, that means sending their children to a school like SCA. For others, God has called and equipped parents to homeschool. We never want to view different callings as being in competition with each other. We believe we are partners in educating our children.

This fall, SCA will be offering three courses that are specifically designed to meet the needs of homeschool families.

Questions about the program can be directed to:

Conversational Spanish

Conversational Spanish will be open to homeschool students entering grades 9-12 and is strongly recommended for students planning to go on the homeschool field trip with the Foundations of Godly Living course.

SCA is excited to welcome Mrs. Cindy Morrison to our teaching staff. Mrs. Morrison graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Spanish education. She also has a certificate of fluency from the University of Valladolid in Spain. After teaching for nine years at Abington Heights Middle and High Schools, Cindy felt the call to Christian school education and has taught at Abington Christian Academy for the past three years. She also teaches adult professionals as a private Spanish tutor.

Foundations of Godly Living

This year’s Foundations of Godly Living curriculum will build on the core principles in last year’s class. The theme for this year will be, “Connect.” The goal is to provide homeschool students with an opportunity to make meaningful connections in the following three areas:

  • Connecting with Godly Peers – “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” One of the goals of this class is to provide homeschool students with the opportunity to grow in their relationships with other Christian teenagers. While the course will be academic in nature, an added bonus of this class over the past five years has been the formation of strong, godly friendships among homeschool students.
  • Connecting Cross Culturally – Once again, the capstone for this course will be a mission trip to Siguatepeque, Honduras, where students will be able to create some life-changing connections with orphaned and at risk students at La Providencia School. Whether you are going down as a returning student, or going for the first time, this trip will open your eyes to missions and help you cultivate your gifts and talents for God.
  • Connecting in your Personal Relationship with God – The ultimate goal of this course is for students to grow in their personal relationship with God. The classroom studies, the extra-curricular activities and the Honduras mission trip are all designed with this goal in mind.

Course details

  • Thursday: 11:15 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
  • Cost: While there is no tuition for the class, there is a $100 registration fee that will serve as a deposit for the mission trip and will be put into an account to go directly toward the cost of the mission trip. Students will also be required to participate in various fundraisers to raise a total of $1,200 per student.
  • Open to students who will be 16 years-old by May 1, 2019.

*Students who are going on the mission trip, must be enrolled in the Foundations Course. Students who are enrolled in the Foundations Course must plan on going on the mission trip.

Summit Navigations

One of the most exciting steps that Summit Christian Academy will be taking to minister to homeschool families is through a brand new academic program called Summit Navigations.

Summit Navigations is a course of study designed for homeschool juniors and seniors who are dual enrolled in college courses – either online or on campus. The purpose of Summit Navigations is to assist students in navigating the college dual enrollment process and to assist parents in navigating the state legal requirements for homeschooling in the state of Pennsylvania. Those who enroll in the Summit Navigations course for 2018-2019 will receive the following assistance with homeschooling:

  • Initial Personal Assessment
    • Each student, along with their parents will have the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Rivers to identify the student’s strengths, weaknesses and goals for the 2018/19 school year.  This assessment will assist Dr. Rivers in ensuring the student receives the most beneficial guidance throughout the school year.
    • During this initial assessment, parents will identify the courses that have already been completed in previous years, and a plan will be formulated that will ensure the student is on track to meet all the legal requirements for graduation at the appropriate time.
  • Weekly Group Class – Every week students will meet for a 30-minute class that will focus on college study skills and keys to succeeding in both an online and traditional class format.  Throughout the week, students will be given various assignments that will ensure they understand the academic process.  This will also serve as a form of accountability to both the parent and the student.
  • Monthly Private Review – At least once a month – and more if warranted – Dr. Rivers will sit down with each student to review what homework has been turned in, where the student is struggling, and what can be done to better assist the student with academic success as a high school/college dual enrolled student. While this should not be viewed as academic tutoring, it will allow parents, students and Dr. Rivers to identify areas to focus on throughout the year and where additional tutoring may be warranted, if necessary.
  • Free Yearly Homeschool Evaluation – Students enrolled in Summit Navigations will be able to complete their required homeschool annual evaluation with Dr. Rivers at no cost.  This evaluation will meet the legal requirements for evaluation by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the local school district.

Course details

  • Tuesday: 11-11:30 a.m. and individual scheduled appointments
  • Cost: $50 registration fee + $29.50 per month x 10 months (September-June)
