Barbara Raught Memorial Scholarship

The Raught family has established the Barbara Raught Memorial Scholarship as an ongoing memorial to her service at this school and to help give more students the opportunity to receive a Christ-centered education.  Gifts designated for this purpose will provide financial aid to students attending Summit Christian Academy. Thank you, God, for Mrs. Raught and for blessing us through her.

Capital needs at SCA

There are several ongoing capital needs at SCA. Please join us in prayer as we work to secure the necessary funds and volunteer labor to complete the following projects.

Replace florescent light bulbs with LED tubes

  • The need: There are some 170 total 2×4 florescent light fixtures (T12 and T8) in the elementary and secondary buildings. By replacing these light fixtures with LED tubes, PPL estimates that we can save about 30% in lighting energy costs.
  • The cost: With volunteer labor, we estimate the cost for total replacement (with PPL’s rebate program) to be approximately $7,000.
  • Next steps: Order the bulbs under PPL’s rebate program and plan a Saturday when volunteers can be trained by an electrician to make the changes in an assembly line fashion.
  • Completion target date: We must convert at least the T-12 fixtures by the end of August 2018.

Upgrade parking lot

  • The need: The parking lot is deteriorating quickly. Holes need to be patched and the surface resealed.
  • The cost: We estimate the cost to be approximately $4,500. Volunteer Paul Himka will provide striping services.
  • Next steps: Following board approval, we will seek out bids from area companies to complete the work, as well as secure needed funds.
  • Completion target date: August 2018.

Enclose walkway between elementary and secondary buildings

  • The need: This project will provide increased security and easier access to move between buildings, particularly during inclement weather.
  • The cost: We estimate the cost (with volunteer labor) to be approximately $12,000.
  • Next steps: Following board approval, we will work with SCA supporter and engineer John Scondras to develop plans to be submitted to the local building inspector. We will also identify volunteers for the project and secure needed funds.
  • Completion target date: August 2018.

Convert elementary building from total electric heat to natural gas

  • The need: The elementary building is total electric. In the winter our monthly electric bill can be as high as $1,800. PPL did an evaluation of our energy needs and estimates that we can save some 70% on energy costs by switching to natural gas.
  • The cost: We estimate the cost (with volunteer labor) to be approximately $20,000. We are working with UGI to determine possible incentives for switching to natural gas.
  • Next steps: Following board approval, we will work with SCA supporter and engineer John Scondras to develop plans to be submitted to the local building inspector. We will also identify volunteers for the project (particularly those with plumbing and heating knowledge) and secure needed funds.
  • Completion target date: Complete the furnace room and begin conversion of one room or section of the elementary building by January, 2019.
